About the Tour
Most everyone knows Lake Tahoe, but very few people have ridden around the lake or the surrounding area. Drive up on Thursday or Friday and get settled for the weekend. On Friday, we will be riding down to Carson City and climbing back on Mt. Rose highway. On Saturday, we go around Lake Tahoe on the classic clockwise loop. On Sunday, we drive to do the famous Golden lakes loop. After getting some lunch in Truckee, we drive home.
Day #1 (Friday): Carson City Loop (Route) 71 miles – 6800 feet
This is a day that is defined by a gentle warm up from Incline Village, a long descent into Carson City, and a long long climb on Mt. Rose.
Day #2 (Saturday): America’s Most Beautiful Ride – Around Lake Tahoe (Route) 72 miles – 4000 feet
Some call this 72-mile circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. We’ll ride clockwise around Lake Tahoe in both Nevada and California. It includes a challenging 800 foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000 foot climb to Spooner Junction. There are also many short rolling ascents and descents totaling over 4,000 vertical feet of elevation gain!
Day #3 (Sunday): Golden Lakes Loop (Route) 61 miles – 4200 feet
“If I had to name a favorite ride in this area, the Gold Lakes Loop would be it. Every time I ride this I am blown away by the quiet roads, the natural beauty and the long but civil climbs.
My favorite start point to beat the ever-present afternoon winds is across from highway from the north terminus of Beckwourth-Calpine Rd. You will get a nice, flat warm-up before the climbs start in earnest. This is ranch country. Pickups and horse trailers, but not much else. Put your tempo guy on the front and let him do all the work until you hit highway 49.”
